Melbourne International Singers Festival (MISF)

Proudly presented by School of Hard Knocks
Federation Square

Queen’s Birthday Weekend (June 8 – 11, 2018)

An unforgettable experience, not just a Festival

The 2017 Melbourne International Singers Festival was a huge success, with four fabulous days of challenging, inspiring and entertaining workshops, rehearsals and amazing concerts!  We continued our tradition of supporting new Australian works with the World premiere of Andy Payne’s ‘Acquired Taste’, Craigh Wilson’s book launch of ‘Intuitive’ and the Australian premiere of Jonathan Dove’s (UK) ‘Tobias and the Angel’, in collaboration with XL Arts.

We can’t wait for the 2018 Festival which will be our 9th year!  Melbourne’s most exciting festival for singers and choirs will present more stunning opportunities to work with some of the world’s finest conductors, composers, arrangers and musicians in magnificent venues in Melbourne’s art precinct.

Proceeds support the School of Hard Knocks in providing arts and cultural programs to the vulnerable and marginalised in our community.

Note that program details and dates, will be confirmed closer to the Festival.

Street Requiem – Brisbane International Singers Festival Event

As part of our inaugural Brisbane International Singers Festival we are proud to present:

STREET REQUIEM
for those who have died on the street.

Created by Kathleen McGuire, Andy Payne and Jonathon Welch, Street Requiem aims to bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to communities struggling to come to terms with street violence and a loss of safety on our streets. It is a highly accessible, contemporary work including additional English, African and Persian lyrics alongside a modern setting of the traditional Latin texts. While at times deeply moving, the work is essentially optimistic and uplifting. The composers have utilised gospel, Celtic, neo-Romantic, neo-Baroque, Indigenous and contemporary genres and instrumentation to reflect the multicultural and multi-faith traditions of modern city living.

Soloists: Dr Jonathon Welch AM and Ms Melissa Gill

Featuring: Members of Brisbane choirs Musica and Voices of Brisbane, and our Absolutely Everybody Festival Choir.

Adults $25
Concession/Child $18

Beyond Hard Knocks – Brisbane International Singers Festival Documentary Screening

Following on from the award winning ‘Choir of Hard Knocks’ documentary……..

Seven yeaJonathon Welchrs on from their meteoric rise to fame, the extraordinary journey continues for many of the original Choir of Hard Knocks members (who when this documentary was filmed, were known as the Choir of Hope and Inspiration) and their Founding Music Director, Jonathon Welch AM.

Facing the day to day financial struggle to keep the Choir operating since moving to independence in 2009, funds are desperately low and Jonathon must find a way to save the Choir. He decides to create the Choir’s first self-devised musical “My Fare Label” based around the members’ experiences of homelessness and disadvantage in the hope it will keep the Choir from financial ruin.

Join us on the opening evening of our exciting BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL SINGERS FESTIVAL as we enjoy this fantastic documentary and share the journey of many of the wonderful original members from the ARIA, Logie and Helpmann Award winning ABC TV Series, Choir of Hard Knocks.

This documentary proves, once again, that the power of music can help transform lives. What better time to enjoy this documentary, than at our very first Brisbane International Singers Festival, where we will sing together and experience for ourselves the very power of the music we’ll be singing together!
