What’s happening in Queensland

The School of Hard Knocks in Queensland has been facilitated with the support of the Queensland Government through the Department of Health (MHAODB). A School Council has been formed, which is led and co-chaired by Dr Christian Rowan MP, former president, AMA Queensland and now Member for Moggill and Honorary Patron of SOHK, along with Ms Leanne Linard MP, Member for Nudgee, and Honorary Patron of SOHK.

The Queensland School launched in October 2014 with the Absolutely Everybody Choral program and three additional arts programs have commenced in 2015. It operates on a school term basis, providing ten weekly sessions of each program per term.

Founder and Artistic Director of The School of Hard Knocks, Dr Jonathon Welch AM, is actively involved in the leadership of the School in Queensland. He regularly visits rehearsals and the programs training and mentoring the staff and participants in addition to advising the School Council and developing new and existing programs. Dr Welch has a deep commitment to empower disadvantaged Australians through participation in arts education and performance programs. He works tirelessly to engage the mainstream professional art, education and choral sectors to fulfil this vision and build a more engaging response. Our programs provide an invaluable sense of social inclusiveness and support to people with mental health challenges and/or substance dependency as well as those who might be experiencing homelessness, disadvantage or isolation.

In Queensland, the School is supported by an Operations Manager, together with outstanding professional program leaders for each individual program. We are happy to introduce our Queensland team to you.
